The last two days I’ve spent waking up to bird song and the sun beaming through the tiny trailer window. I’ve swam in the lake, paddle boated out to the middle of the water, drifting back into shore and listened to loons calling to each other from opposites ends of the lake. It has been rejuvenating and much needed and while I am not unhappy to be heading back to reality, I’m always happy to have been a part of the solitude in nature.
This has been a great way to kick off my #30screenlessnights by thinking about nature and getting some much needed reading done in the early hours and evenings. By the end of the days I’m typically exhausted from the sun and fresh air and with a few pages of my book read I quickly doze into a lovely slumber.
I think we all get caught up in our devices, seeing what’s happening with our favourite bloggers or checking witty tweets but we eventually get stuck in a screen routine. We wake up with our alarms and before rolling out of bed to start the day we give ourselves a few minutes of scrolling. While these few minutes quickly turn into half an hour, reading comments and several apps before we realize it’s an hour later then we wanted up in the first place. We’ve all been there!
This initiative is a great way to get back into your natural rhythm. We get back to our productive mornings in whatever capacity they may be. We eat a better breakfast because we aren’t running late from scrolling. We pack a healthier lunch rather than admitting defeat and grabbing something on-the-go or having an extra cuddle with our fur baby over a morning matcha. Our days become infinitely clearer and personally beneficial by focusing on our own personal self in the morning instead of catching up with the world. Once we get our morning and evenings more in tune with our selves, then we can begin to interact with others in a more pragmatic way. If our immediate focus in the morning and before we drift off to sleep is thinking about others, then we are starting and ending our days in the wrong mindset. Let’s get back into the swing of self!
I’m guilty of checking my work e-mails first thing in the morning and immediately start thinking about when I will get back to people, when the needed paperwork will get done and all this happens before I get out of bed. That’s not good!

I’ve also been trying to leave my phone in the car when I go grocery shopping, or have to go somewhere that I may have to wait in line so that I don’t aimlessly stand in line flipping through the web. It’s such a liberating feeling to look around, people watch or have conversations with people. This can even stem into eating a meal and not taking a photo to share with people. It becomes something that you can enjoy within yourself. Don’t take your phone to the beach every time in case there’s a photo oppourtunity. I miss the days of cameras. Straight up picture taking for yourself and not the world. My husband cut the grass the other day and the amount of dragonflies that came to eat the mosquitoes was magical and we just sat there and took it all in. Someone commented on how amazing it would be to take a photo but we said to just take it all in. Remember this moment. Tell your kids someday.
